The different education between the US and China

Before I came to the US, I heard a lot of differences in the education system between America and China. But I didn’t believe it. After I came to America, I learn about some difference between the two country from my daughter.

“ Mum, my classmates can walk in the class!” My daughter told to me with surprise when she 1^st day entered the school in the US.

In China student couldn’t walk in the class. They must sit in their seat very well to listen to the teaching. After 40—45 minites it will have break time. At that time they can play and walk to do somethings. However, in the US students can walk a while in the class and they don’t have a clear break time.

The difference between this two countries are teaches control of the students or teaches students self-control.

When my daughter come back home, I will ask her about homework. But she always answers me no homework or already finished. I feel surprised, because in China Teachers often give their students a lot of homework. In the US, teachers seldom do this; they just let them to read the book that they like.

The different between them are teachers ask students do more exercises or ask their students learn more by themselves freely.

My daughter often tell me that her teacher praised her. In China，Teachers always criticized their students when they find their students’ shortcomings, they want to help them so they criticized them. Opposite in the US, teachers always praise their students that they want them to have self-confidence.

The different between two countries that teachers hope their students to reduce their shortcomings or teachers help the students build their self-esteem.

Different countries have different cultures and education system. No good and no bad. But if your children come here to study, as parents you should tell them that they are different and you should explain to them why is different.

Essay About the Military

The military is the best chance to improve yourself in the US if you are an immigrant and you don't have money.

When I came to the USA, I didn't know what I should do. If you don't have any goals, you are frustrated. Now there are hard times in the World, and I read a book about the military, then I decided what I really want.

My family is very big. I have 4 younger sisters and 2 brothers. I'm the oldest child in my family. So I can help my family get insurance, earn some money, and improve myself. In the US, the military will give you a lot of benefits (free education, insurance, apartments...), and also you can learn English faster.

I decided the Navy is the best for me! All my family is proud of me. My younger sisters are talking to their friends about me.

But I must learn to pass ASVAB test (math, general, English skills). Without that test you can't enjoy the military. On the internet you also can find preparation material (books) special for that test. So it is very easy to order.

I wish other immigrants will find easier way to survive after they moved. But finally I founded my way in my new life, and new goals, I want to reach.

A Dedicated Student

Elena was driving through the night from New Jersey to Raleigh. She started having car trouble, but she kept going. Finally, in Virginia at about 6am her tire blew-out and she swerved off the road. She called a tow-truck and had her car towed all the way to Raleigh. Finally, she arrived home, changed, drank a cup of coffee, and then headed to English class with no sleep. In class she participated and discussed grammar, but she did not reveal her long struggle until asked about her trip by the teacher.

She is one dedicated student.

No Class on Monday and Student Writers

Hi Everyone!! This is just a friendly reminder that we do not have regular classes on Monday (Oct 19). We are doing registration.

On another note, students from the writing class are going to start putting up their essays. This is a great chance for everyone to see what excellent students we have and to learn more English.

Wake Tech has registration at the Church of Christ on Brooks Ave for new students. Please come at 9:00am on Monday, October 19, and be ready to stay until at least 12:00pm. Students arriving after 9:15am will not be able to register.

We are Lucky!

I frequently read articles from Inside Higher Ed. There are a few great blogs on community college education. Today, one article jumped out at me. It detailed how San Joaquin Delta College in central California was facing such severe budget cuts that they were eliminating their ESL program and most of their adult comp ed classes. Only a few ESL classes would be offered to transition-level students. It made me think that we are truly fortunate to be able to offer a full program to our students and community.

The International Festival of Raleigh

The best show in Raleigh is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Come downtown and enjoy great music, dancing, and FOOD!! Come practice your English and make new friends.

Saturday 10am-10pm; and Sunday 12-6pm.
